Manda Island Restoration

Landscape-scale coastal restoration on Kenya's northern archipelago

The Manda Island Restoration Project is a landscape-scale initiative combining mangrove rehabilitation, sustainable fisheries management, and community enterprise development across Manda Island and its surrounding waters.

Since 2019, we have worked with local communities to restore over 200 hectares of degraded mangrove forest, establish community-managed fishing zones, and develop alternative livelihood programmes that reduce pressure on marine resources.

The project operates on a simple principle: the people who live closest to these ecosystems are the ones best positioned to protect them — provided they have the economic incentive and technical support to do so. Every intervention is designed to generate both ecological recovery and household income.
